Cannabinoid
aka phytocannabinoid
Cannabinoids are a class of chemical compounds that act on the cannabinoid receptors (CB1, CB2) in the body's endocannabinoid system. The cannabis plant produces over 100 phytocannabinoids; the most studied include THCA, THC, CBD, CBG, CBN, CBC, THCV, THCP, and HHC. Cannabinoids exist in the plant in their acidic (THCA, CBDA) form and convert to their neutral (THC, CBD) form via decarboxylation.
Example: The total cannabinoid content of this batch is 28.4%.
Etymology: Coined in the 1940s-60s as researchers isolated the active compounds in cannabis.
